Southwest Arkansas Correctional Center Hosts Arkansas DOC’s First‑Ever Daddy Daughter Dance

Posted by Manda Bass on April 3, 2026

The Southwest Arkansas Correctional Center made history last month by hosting the Arkansas Department of Corrections’ first‑ever Daddy Daughter Dance—a landmark event centered on rehabilitation, family unity, and second chances. The dance was created to encourage residents to continue striving for positive change by strengthening the bonds that motivate them most: their families.

“Our commitment to reentry is rooted in strengthening families—because when we create opportunities for meaningful connection, accountability, and healing, we empower individuals to return home not just changed, but ready to rebuild lasting relationships and contribute to stronger communities,” said Secretary of Corrections Lindsay Wallace.

Deputy Warden John Miners reflected on the significance of the event, stating, “What happened here today matters. It will be remembered, and it will continue to inspire the work we do for service of rehabilitation, family unity, and second chances.”

Residents selected for this event met specific criteria, including having a daughter between the ages of six (6) and seventeen (17), actively progressing in their treatment program, and demonstrating good behavior.

This event gave incarcerated fathers a chance to exchange jumpsuits for tuxedos and reestablish bonds with their daughters. For some, this marked the first opportunity to just be seen as “dad” in years.

The fathers were all dressed in tuxedos and full of excitement as they waited for their daughters to walk the runway to meet them. At the end of the runway, they were crowned ‘princess’ for the day and presented with beautiful wrist corsages by their fathers.

The celebration was filled with heartfelt highlights. The fathers opened the event with a performance of “My Girl,” dedicated to their daughters, and later showcased a choreographed “Boots on the Ground” line dance they had spent weeks practicing. The fathers read letters they had written to their daughters apologizing for their past mistakes and sharing their hopes for the future relationships they are working to rebuild.

Several moments stood out as especially meaningful. One father was able to sing “Happy Birthday” to his daughter with the entire room joining in. Another father reunited with his daughter after more than two years apart. One young woman shared that she could finally see a positive change in her father and looked forward to getting to know her “new dad” when he is released in the coming weeks.

Although emotions ran high at times, the day was filled with far more laughter than tears. For a few meaningful hours, these men were simply fathers reconnecting with their daughters, setting the tone for their relationships once released from the Center.

This historic event was made possible by the dedicated staff of the Southwest Arkansas Correctional Center, many of whom came in on their days off.

This event could not have been possible without our generous partners.
