Deputy Warden Steve Outlaw and Major Malone Luncheon
On June 15, 2017, the Pine Bluff Unit Employee Incorporation hosted a luncheon on behalf of Deputy Warden Outlaw and Major Malone as they prepare to move to other units. DW Outlaw will be transferring to the Ouachita River Unit and Major Malone will be moving to the Ester Unit.
Ouachita River Unit hosts Annual Fishing Derby
The Annual Fishing Derby was held on June 15, 2017 and was sponsored by the Unit Employee Corporation. This year, the Corporation purchased 350 catfish to stock the pond for all the participants. Awards were presented to children (11-under category & 12 over category) that had the largest catch, the smallest catch, and from the total catch, the child was allowed to pick their 5 biggest fish for weigh in. Prizes included Magic Springs season passes, and a bicycle. There were over 100 door prizes given away to all adults. The Derby included food and fun for all activities such as bouncy house, Bag-O tournament, and an obstacle course. Staff came out in big numbers and made the 2017 Fishing Derby a great success.
2017 Southern States Manhunt Field Trials Winners
Winners are:
Sgt. Corey Lowery, Sgt. Tristan Head, Sgt. Jonathan Lawrence and Sgt. Eddie Powell won 2nd place in Single Leash Dog Division.
Sgt. Ray Anderson, Sgt. Michael McClelland, Sgt. Adam Helm and Warden Hoot Gibson won 1st place for Pack Dogs Division.
Sgt. Chris Brown and Sgt. Brian Cockrell won 1st place in Drug Detection Dog Division.
Sgt. Jeremy Campbell and Sgt. Brian Cockrell won 3rd place in Narcotic’s Division.
Sgt. Billy Hayes and Sgt Brian Cockrell took home 4th place in Narcotic’s Division.

Governor Hutchinson attends 44th Annual GED graduation at ORCU
Governor Asa Hutchinson gave the Commencement Address at the GED Graduation Ceremony at the Ouachita River Unit on May 23, 2017. The GED program makes it possible for inmates to earn an high school diploma. The school’s mission is to provide a positve, safe educational environment, where self worth and success are natural outcomes that enable students to become successful in the 21st Century. The Arkansas Department of Correction has graduated over 24,000 inmates with their GEDs since the school opened.
