ADC Represented at “Power to Get Wealth Job Fair”

Sgt. Latoris Willis of the Maximum Security Unit represented the Arkansas Department of Correction at the third annual “Power to Get Wealth Job Fair” held on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Saint Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock. The ADC was one of more than 50 businesses recruiting potential employees. Sgt. Willis had the opportunity to visit with several hundred people inquiring about employment with the ADC, and she did so in a professional manor which reflected well on Team ADC!

Grimes Unit Staff Unite in Moment of Remembrance and Reflection

On the morning of January 9, 2019, the staff at the Grimes Unit in Newport met to remember and honor former employee, Sgt. J. Staggs, who passed away a year ago. A moment of silence and a time of prayer was held for the Staggs family, the family of Cpl. T. Bumpers, a unit employee who passed away on January 4th, as well as the facility’s staff and extended family members.

Several staff members shared stories about Sgt. Staggs as a way of honoring his memory, which proved to be therapeutic for the group that was assembled. It was clear that he was loved by many and made a positive impact on everyone at the facility. The special time also served as a reminder of the tremendous bond shared among those in the ADC “family.”

Grimes Unit Hosts Newport Economic Development Commission for December Meeting

The Grimes Unit hosted the end-of-year meeting for the Newport Economic Development Commission (NEDC) in December 2018.

NEDC Executive Director Jon Chadwell allowed Warden DeAngelo Earl to begin the meeting by speaking about the Department of Correction. He shared with the group some of the reasons why the Grimes Unit is a great asset to Newport and Jackson County, as well as surrounding counties. In addition to the pay for newly hired staff, Warden Earl discussed the many programs provided by Grimes – and the ADC as a whole – for the rehabilitation of inmates, including educational opportunities, medical care, and mental health treatment.

NEDC members were treated to a tour of the facility, of which they were impressed by the cleanliness of the building and the structure itself. They also enjoyed the opportunity to speak with unit staff, including correctional officers and supervisors, about their job responsibilities. In addition, they expressed their gratitude for the unit’s involvement in the community – in particular, city beautification efforts and involvement with the youth in area schools.

The guests’ perception of prison was changed in a positive manner as a result of their visit. Hopefully that positive light will continue to spread throughout the community and the state and assist with the Department’s ongoing recruitment efforts.

Unit Doors Receive a Fun Facelift for the Holidays

McPherson Unit

In a show of Christmas spirit and cheer, the McPherson Unit held their annual door decorating contest during the month of December. A record number of doors – 30 –were judged!
